November 3, 2019 Episode 1 (UK Original Air Date February 19, 2008)

Peggy looks out the window and reports that another car has just pulled up in front of Jack’s. Ronnie says it must have been a burglary. Peggy says she’s just guessing. Ronnie says, “and nearly a whole year until next Christmas.” Peggy tells the girls that it’s not very nice. Ronnie replies that she’s right, and they shouldn’t gloat. It would be terrible if something happened to that precious stereo of his. Peggy tells them that is enough. Ronnie calls Phil out for being quiet. Phil shuffles his newspaper and says it’s hard to get a word in edgewise with them. Peggy continues monitoring the square and says that something is going on at the Masood’s. She reports that there is an electrical van there. Phil mouths “oooh” to the girls. Peggy says it’s all happening this morning, isn’t it?
Zainab runs out of the house towards the worker and tells him he’s too late. Their home is ruined. Zainab says she doesn’t even want to look at it. She orders the worker inside to meet with her son. Shabnam walks out and apologizes. Zainab asks her, “what are you?” Shabnam replies that she is stupid. Zainab repeats it over and over that she is stupid. Mickey walks up and asks what is going on there. Zainab orders Shabs to tell Mickey what she’s done. Shabs tells him that she ran the bath and went back to bed. Then they realized they had a little flood. Zainab screams, “a little bit of a flood? The whole house is ruined! The electrical is shot. The house is unlivable! We’ll have to throw ourselves at the mercy of your Uncle!” Zainab asks Mickey if she can go to his house and use the phone.
Jack is putting his flat back together, and Max comes in. Max asks Jack if anything was nicked. Jack tells him not that he can tell, but things can be replaced. Max asks him if Jack still thinks this was kids as the policeman walks in. He tells Jack that they can’t get any fingerprints. It looks like they came through the bathroom window. Jack says that the door was pushed in from the inside. Max asks him if he still thinks it was kids? Jack says he knows it wasn’t. Max asks Jack where he’s going? Jack tells him three guesses.
Dot tries to comfort Bradley. Bradley and Dot are making marmalade to which Bradley says it’s his therapy. He jokes that he’s going to write a book that details how to mend a broken heart. Dot tells him it is nice to see him smiling. Clare comes in and says they look busy. She tells Bradley she’s just seen his Uncle Jack coming out of the flat and he doesn’t look pleased. Bradley says he’s not getting involved as he slices orange peels. Clare wonders if his Dad might have stuff down there too? Bradley repeats that he’s not getting involved. Clare says that it would serve Max right for hurting Bradley. Dot scolds Clare and tells her it’s not the way. Clare responds that it’s the whole point of an enemy is to see them hurt. Dot tells Clare that if you give out hate, you get hate. If you give out love, you get love. Dot tells Bradley they don’t have enough of the jam jars. Pauline used to have some, but she doesn’t reckon Ian still has them. Clare immediately volunteers to pop over to ask. Dot says she doubts he’ll have them. Clare says that it won’t hurt to ask and reminds Dot about giving out love and all. Clare leaves and Dot motions that she knows it’s early days and all, but he might think about Clare to date. Bradley explains to Dot he’s not Clare’s type. Dot tells him not to rule himself out! She tells Bradley not to cut the orange peels too thick as his grandfather doesn’t like it thick.
Zainab is on the phone, and it’s obvious there is no room at the Uncle’s house. She says she’ll ring Mas’s cousin and see if they have any room. She wipes her hand after having put it in something sticky. Keith comes in and asks if everything is alright. She tells him she’s just making one more call. Mickey is sitting on the couch with Shabnam. She thanks him for always being so kind to her. Keith makes a comment about how many calls Zainab has made. Mickey tells him to stop being such a skinflint! Shabnam tells them that Zainab is wasting her time because they’ve fallen out with all of her Dad’s family. Mickey asks his Dad if they could stay for a couple of days. Shabnam says they couldn’t do that. Mickey works out the sleeping arrangements. Keith says they can so long as it’s just a couple of days. Tam comes in and tells them it’s going to be at least a week, maybe two.
Jack shows up at Jase’s flat. Jack wonders where Jay is. Jase says if he wants to nose around, he can get the law and a warrant. Jack tells him that his little brat was going to key up his car last night. Jase apologizes that someone broke into his flat, but it ain’t got nothing to do with him or his son. Jack tells him if he hadn’t been a cop for the better part of 20 years, he’s inclined to believe him. Dawn chimes in that they were both with her last night. Jack reminds her that she was working at the club all night last night. He tells her not to give up her day job if she’s going to give alibis like that. Jay comes out after Jack leaves. Dawn asks Jay what the truth is. Jay walks away. Dawn looks at Jase. He tells her it wasn’t him as Jay was with him all night. End of.
Clare has Ian looking for the jars. He couldn’t find any. Clare asks him how his shoulder is after the massage. She tells him he has a fabulous physique. Ian looks at her and asks, “really?” Christian asks Ian to come over. He tells Ian that Tunstall is expecting silver service! Ian replies that he hasn’t done silver service since the Meal Machine. Christian says they’ll have to get an agency in. Ian replies, there goes the profit margin. Clare calls Ian into the kitchen and explains she used to do silver service in Scotland. She offers to help him brush up on his skills at Dot’s one evening. He tells her to pop over to the cafe and ask Marie about jam jars. She tells him she’ll see him tomorrow then.
Max comes by to pick up Abi and Lauren. He takes a poke at her drinking and missing picking up Abi. The girls come out, and he offers to take them out for pizza. Tanya tells him no, she’s got fish for them. Max leaves with the girls. Tanya calls Sean and leaves him an apologetic message.
Clare is cleaning jam jars she’s brought back. Clare asks if Dot is going out tomorrow night? Dot lets her know she doesn’t intend to. Clare offers to cook for them tomorrow night. Dot thinks that is sweet of her.
Peggy lets Phil know that Jack is there to see him. Peggy tells him she was just telling Jack how sorry they were to hear about his break-in. Phil jokes they were going to pass the hat around the Pub for him. Jack stares at Phil. Phil asks him, “so?” Jack says it’s a would you or wouldn’t you look. Ronnie and Roxie listen in from upstairs. They argue about it, and Jack says all he wants to hear is he did or didn’t do it. Phil tells him that if he starts spreading rumors, it will be more than his flat that gets trashed. Ronnie comes down, and Jack asks her if she did it? Ronnie reminds him she gave him his keys back. She tells Jack he should go.
Sean shows up at Tanya’s. She tells him she’s been out of her mind. She tells him that yesterday was a bad day. She’d been drinking and didn’t mean what she said. Sean tells her that he waited for her for so long. He wanted her and wanted all of her, but she’s not all there for him. Tanya promises Sean she will be. He tells her he’ll believe it when Tanya shows him. Sean tells her he thinks she’s scared. Tanya tells Sean she’s not and pulls him into the living room.
Clare tells Chelsea that they are basically on their own again today and not much on the books until after lunch and flips the open sign to closed. Chelsea questions her about it. Clare responds that she’ll just tell Tanya that Nigel had a heart attack or something. Chelsea is shocked, and Clare tells her not to be as she’s heard what Chelsea and her step-brother did to Sean. Chelsea wonders who told her that? Clare tells her that it doesn’t matter as she’s impressed and, in fact, more so the more she hears. Clare tells her they could help one another out.
The Masood’s move in with Keith and Mickey. Zainab is rude to Shabnam. Mickey wonders why she lets her mum talk to her like that. Zainab offers up Shabs to cook for them tonight. Keith is warming up to the thought of a home-cooked meal. Zainab tells him they could have stayed with any of Mas’s relatives but with the post office and everything it’s easier to stay local.
Sean and Tanya finish their afternoon romp. She tells Sean that she can be a bad girl when she wants to be. Sean tells Tanya he knew that bad girl was in there, and she was just hiding her. Oscar starts to cry. Sean tells Tanya that he guesses that it is his cue to go. She stops him. He asks if he should leave out the back door? She tells him she doesn’t care if he uses the front and Max sees him. In fact, let him see it! We’ll rub his nose in it. She tells Sean she was not going to do anything for her birthday tomorrow, but now she’s going to throw a party.
Christian and Ian are still discussing the silver service. Ian is frustrated, and Christian tells him he does know a thing or two. Christians’ phone rings, and it’s a guy he met out. Ian gets frustrated and yells that he’s going over to the caff and to call him when he’s finished. Christian waves him off and tells his gentleman caller that he can send for him for the date. He tells the caller he can give him the address of where he’s staying. Ian is appalled.
Ian pops into the cafe, and Jane is on the phone, letting Tanya know she can help sort out her birthday party. Jane tells her to leave it with her to sort it. Jane tells her she can have it at cost. Ian is not happy and wants to know who he’s giving it away at cost. She tells him it’s Tanya and it’s called being kind. Jane wonders what he’s doing round there as he’s meant to be sorting the big party with Christian. He tells her that he wants Christian out of their house by Saturday. She wonders why and Ian tells her he’s driving him nuts, and he’s got his gay friend coming to pick him up on Saturday night. Jane wonders what the problem is? Ian says he will not have it around his kids. Jane tells him Christian is hardly an adult himself. Ian leaves upset. He runs into Jase and asks him about the rent. Jase tells him that he has had a few problems on the work front, and he’s going to need a few more weeks. Ian tells him he wants him gone by the weekend! Jase tells him he can’t do that? He’s got rights! Jase pokes him. Ian reminds him he’s on probation and that constitutes assault, and he’s got a whole square of witnesses.
Clare pops in as Dot finishes the marmalade. She sends Chelsea a text. Dot wonders what she’s doing home at lunchtime. Clare says she’s just popped in to check in on her as she worries about Dot. The phone rings, and Clare answers. Chelsea is on the other end and asks what it is she’s meant to say. Clare feigns being upset and Dot motions for her to give the phone to her. Clare sits down and tells the “caller” she’ll pass the message on. Clare explains to Dot that they said not to worry. Dot wonders who they are. Clare explains that the nursing home said that Jim has been asking after her. Dot reminds Clare that he knew she wasn’t coming today. Dot says she’ll have to go today anyway. Clare tells her she should stay with Carol, so she’s closer to Jim. Dot says she couldn’t put Carol out like that, and she’s got her job to think about. Clare sorts it and says she’ll cover for her at the job and watch over Bradley. Dot agrees to give Carol a call. Clare goes in to talk and convinces Bradley to go with Dot to Carol’s, so she’s not on her own.
Max asks Jack if he’s figured it out. Jack tells him not yet. He says that an unsolved crime is sometimes used to his advantage. He asks Max if he’s supposed to pick up the kids.
Zainab is disgusted by the kitchen. She yells at Shabnam for ruining the dinner. Shabnam apologizes as Mickey listens in. He finally speaks up and tells Zainab she’s not to speak to Shabnam that way. Zainab tells Mickey she will speak to her daughter any way she likes. Mickey tells her not while she’s living under his room. Zainab is angry and says she doesn’t have to take this. Mickey tells her that she has so many places begging for her to stay. She can go to one of them. Shabs tries to stop her mum, and Mickey tells her to let her go. It’s about time she learned that there are consequences to her actions.
Dot and Bradley are getting ready to head out. Clare tells Dot that she’s going to miss her. Bradley tells Dot they should get going. Clare tells Bradley to look after Dot as she’s extraordinary. Dot asks Clare is she’s going to be ok on her own. Clare replies that if she is lonely, she’ll call Nigel.
Jane tells Ian she will absolutely not tell him. Ian reminds her that Christian is her brother. Jane tells him that it was his idea, he started it, and he can tell him. Christian tells them he can hear them. Ian tells Christian he’s got the wrong end of the stick as he’s offering him the flat for 600 pounds, and he can do whatever he likes there. Ian darts out as he has to check something. Jane looks confused.
Zainab is on the phone with Mas and tells him it’s alright. She tells him that Shab and Tam are staying across the road, but she couldn’t bear it, and she came to his cousin’s house. In reality, she’s at the post office.
Peggy is thrilled that the Pub is full again. Chelsea wonders what Clare is up to. Clare tells her she just wanted to be on her own. Chelsea doesn’t believe her. Clare says she’d likely not believe Chelsea if she said the same to her. She buys her a drink. Ian comes in, and Clare gives him the eye. The cops come in along with Jack. They arrest Phil on suspicion of burglary. Peggy wonders what they think they are doing. Phil looks at Jack and says, “is this the best you’ve got? You’ve got nothing.” Jack says he’s not so sure about that. Peggy sends Ronnie up to call Ronnie Scott. Ronnie calls and explains to Roxy what’s happening. Ronnie tells Roxy she needs a pen as she’s gotten the machine and needs to write a number down. Ronnie pulls out Jacks’s keys and asks Roxy what she’s done. Roxy tells her that she said if Phil did it, she’d be proud. Roxy looks nervous.
