September 29, 2019 Episode 1 (UK Original Air Date February 1, 2008)

A car comes careening through the market stalls. It stops and dumps out a blonde (Clare Bates) in clubbing clothes. Billy asks if she is alright. She screams in frustration.
Ronnie is lying on the sofa, and Roxy is comforting her. Jack is lying in bed, looking downtrodden.
Clare bangs on Dot’s door, screaming her name through the mail slot. She walks to the sidewalk and notices her boot is broken.
Hazel is setting the table, and Minty stops her from carrying the plates. Hazel tells him she’s ok. Minty tells her he’s going to call Tanya and let her know Hazel won’t be coming in. Hazel shushes him, and Garry enters the room. Garry darts off quickly without a word. Minty tells Hazel he will speak with Garry. She reminds him he’s not eaten his breakfast yet. He tells her that she should eat it as she is eating for two now. She sighs heavily and yells after him that he will be home for his tea, right? He calls back yes and is gone.
Shabnam is searching for something, and Tamwar comes into the room. She tells him it’s not nice to sneak up one people. Tamwar tells her he wasn’t sneaking. Shabnam says to him not to look at her that way. She tells him that their Mum is big enough to take care of herself.
Heather comes into the laundrette and finds Clare in the office. Heather inquires as to if she could help her. Clare tells her she is looking for Dot. Heather asks her is she is a friend of Dot’s. Clare responds that she is something like that.
Jack’s mobile rings. It’s Selena. He hits the dismiss button. His home phone rings, and he walks out before he can hear Selena’s message. Selena tells him that there has been a change of plans, and they are leaving today.
Roxy is talking with Peggy about Ronnie’s heartbreak. Ronnie comes in, and Phil tells her that it’s about time she was shot of Jack. Roxy says she’s making Ronnie some tea. Ronnie tells her she’s going back to bed.
Roxy thanks Phil for his support. There is banging on the door, and Roxy goes to answer.

Jack is at the door banging, and Clare walks up behind him. She asks if he’s keen, isn’t he? Roxy comes to the door, and it’s Jack with a bouquet. Jack asks Roxy why she couldn’t help herself in telling Ronnie he slept with Selena. Roxy tells him he forced her to do it. Jack tells Roxy he was going to do it. She tells him he was too late. Clare asks if Peggy is home. Roxy asks Jack, who is she? Jack replies, “how should I know?” Clare says it wasn’t a difficult question. Roxy says to Clare, “Do us a favor, love, and get lost.” Clare quickly snips back that she can guess which family she’s from. Roxy yells after her that if she’s looking for punters, she can find them down on the back of Shaw St. Jack tries to push in to take Ronnie the flowers, but Roxy tells him not on his life.

Shabnam comes into the shop as Zainab declares she would never understand why people are interested in these monstrosities. Shab is looking for a book. Zainab asks her to look after the shop while she heads to the wholesalers. Zainab stops herself and remembers it’s the day of Shabs final exam. Shabnam tells her it’s ok and to go ahead. Zainab hesitates but decides to go for a quick hour. Shabs asks Zainab if they are doing ok? Zainab asks her what her brother has been saying? Shabnam tells her nothing. Zainab tells her good because he has a very overactive imagination.

Minty asks Garry to hand him a tool. Minty asks again and is ignored by Garry. Minty comes out from under the car. He tells Garry that he knows it’s a shock but give it time and it will be ok. Garry tells him it’s more like a nightmare. They continue to argue. Phil calls out “morning boss” and is ignored. Garry tells Minty that that kid will be right embarrassed with Barbara flaming Cortland coming to pick him up from school. He continues that by the time the kid is old enough to sign up, Minty will be too old to him his spend his first giro. Minty tells him that he and Hazel want him to be part of it. Garry tells him he won’t, and as far as he’s concerned, this is a baby-free zone. Garry turns on the radio, and Baby Love is playing. Garry turns it off and stomps off to get lunch. Phil tells Garry he’s not going on his time. Garry says then Phil will have to fire him, and it will save him from listing to Minty bleed on about babies for nine months. Phil tells Minty that went well. Minty hopes it will get better. Phil says that Garry is just upset because he won’t be the baby anymore. Phil says that Minty has to face up to his responsibilities as a baby is not cheap.
Clare is sitting in the cafe. Jane asks her is she plans to order anything. Clare tells her she’s waiting on someone. She asks Jane if the same bloke still runs the cafe. Jane crosses her arms and tells her that he is her husband. Clare says it’s a bit of a step down for Jane, isn’t it? Jane asks her who she is? Clare responds, “bacon sandwich, please?” Garry comes in and spies Clare. He asks Jane who she is. Jane tells him to steer clear as she’s the kind of girl who will make you pay for extras.

Heather is singing with the Spice Girls and dancing as she cleans the laundrette. She doesn’t hear Minty come in. She turns to swing it to the left and sees Minty. He asks her to do him a favor and keep Hazel busy and bring her round to the Vic later. She tells him she hates secrets so as not to say to her. Minty is glad she will do it. He tells her that he’ll call her when he’s ready.
Hazel is at the fruit and veg talking to Billy. He’s got little Will all bundled up. Minty comes up behind Hazel and is joyed to see the baby. He heads to the Vic, and Billy follows him, handing the baby to Hazel. She is visibly sad to hold the baby. Billy tells her to do a quick walk around the square, sing him the bubble song, and he’ll be right back.

Peggy comes in and tells Ronnie that Phil didn’t mean it. Ronnie says to forget it. Peggy notices the flowers and wonders who gave her those. Ronnie tells her they are a gift from Roxy. Peggy tells her that Jack will be kicking himself. She says that Ronnie is bright and beautiful and worth it. Minty appears and asks for Peggy’s help. Roxy comes in. Ronnie asks her if he’s called yet. Roxy tells her not to her knowledge.

Garry asks Clare if she is from around there? Seeing as he would never forget a pretty face. She goes to answer him, and Jane asks her for two quid to pay for her lunch. Garry pays for it. Jane replies that there is one born every minute. Billy walks in and notices Clare. Garry asks if they know each other. Billy says she looks better than she did when he first saw her. He mouths to Garry that the car she was tossed out of nearly ran him over. He looks at Clare and tells her she should phone the old bill. But then again, he says, maybe she doesn’t want to get on the wrong side of a bloke like that. Garry rushes out. Jane tells Clare that the fellows around here aren’t going to fall for it. Clare rolls her eyes.

Billy comes to get Will from Hazel. He tells her that she is a natural. Hazel’s face is saddened. Peggy and Minty dart into the Vic. Peggy hopes she hasn’t seen anything.

Shabnam is on the phone and starts searching for what they are looking for asking for. She sees all of the overdue invoices. Zainab comes in and offers to treat Shabs as it is the day of her last exams. Shabnam, having just seen the financial crisis they are in, tries to give it back, but her Mum doesn’t have it. Zainab tells Shabnam that she is very proud of her even though she doesn’t say it very often. She sends Shabnam on her way. Shabnam is very sad and heads off.

Clare thinks she sees Pauline going into her gate and calls out. Ian turns to see Clare. He doesn’t know who she is. She asks him surely he remembers chucking her and Sonia out of the cafe many a time. Ian is shocked and says she’s not little anymore. She says she is indeed not little anymore. He asks her what she’s doing there. Clare says she was looking for Dot, but she wasn’t home. She shows him what her boyfriend has done to her. She tells him she just needs somewhere to clean herself up, and then she’ll be out of there. He brings her inside.

Heather comes in with snacks and tells her that Minty is tied up with a motor or something. Hazel is confused, but Heather manages to distract her into popping the popcorn.

Roxy comes to the club to gather Ronnie’s things. Jack stops her at the door and asks why Ronnie can’t get them herself. His phone rings, and it’s Selena again. He dismisses the call. He tells Roxy that this is stupid, as Selena doesn’t mean anything to him. She replies that it didn’t look that way when he was straddling her. Jack tells her that what she can’t stand Ronnie moving on without her. Roxy tells him that he needs to get things in order for her sister because she wants out.

Clare is in a towel on the phone. Ian walks in as she is telling the person that as soon as she gets the cash, she’s on the first train out of there. Ian brings her clothes. Clare says he seems a bit flustered. She asks if he is ok. Clare wonders if these are Pauline’s old things? He tells her that they are Janes, and she doesn’t like to make much of a splash. She starts to get dressed, and Ian dashes out of the room.

Jack is walking by the Vic and sees Ronnie through the curtains. Roxy comes in and wonders what she is looking at? Ronnie tells her nothing. Roxy tells her that no man is worth crying over. Roxy tells Ronnie that she’s going to draw her a bath and pick out the tartiest outfit for the night out. Ronnie declines the offer. Roxy tells her she needs to do it for herself if not for Roxy because she hates to tell her, but she stinks.

Jane comes in calls out for Ian. She hears giggling and walks in to find Ian zipping Clare’s dress. Jane wonders what in the hell is going on? Clare says she needed a hand, and Ian kindly stepped in. Jane replies that she bet he did. Jane looks at the dress and asks if it is her dress. Clare says Ian told her she never wore it. Jane says that it is because she was saving it! Ian rushes Jane out to let Clare finish. Clare spies Ian’s wallet and takes out two hundred quid. Ian comes back in, and Clare quickly hides the money behind her back. Ian hands her his card in case she ever needs to look him up.

Hazel and Heather are watching Dirty Dancing. Hazel wonders where Minty said he was going again. Heather tries hard to distract Hazel. Hazel says she’s going out to find him. Heather says she is coming along. Hazel wonders why she’s so clingy today. Heather says if she didn’t know better, she thinks Hazel was trying to get rid of her. Heather says they can get some chips on the way.

Shabnam is sitting at the table when her Mum comes in. Zainab assumes she walked out of her exam. Shabs tells her that there wasn’t an exam. Zainab asks if they are rescheduling. Shabnam tells her that there was no exam because she didn’t take an exam. Zainab asks her if she lied then? Shabs says, then they both lied. She opens the file of delinquent bills and asks her Mum when she was going to tell her about these? Zainab tells her that it is not what they are talking about. She’s disappointed that Shabnam has lied to her and Masood. The phone rings, and they both call out “Tamwar” in unison. Masood is on the phone and updates them on his father’s improved condition. Noone lets on about the troubles brewing at home.

Ronnie wonders what would have happened if they hadn’t arrived at Phil’s wedding. Roxy says she would be married to Damian, wondering what the hell went wrong in her life. Roxy tells Ronnie she saved her from that. Ronnie tells her she would have been just fine on her own. Ronnie wonders if she ever gets the feeling they’ll end up like Aunt Peg and Aunt Sal? Roxy calls bagsy on not being Sal. Ronnie says Roxy better not be making her up to look like her.

Ian asks Clare if she has to go? He’s sure Dot would love to see her. Clare says she must. Jane asks about her dress. Clare tells her she’s doing her a favor. Jane asks Ian to get Clare a taxi. Clare tells them she can manage. Ian goes to hand her money, but Clare tells him she doesn’t need any handouts. Ian asks her again if she is sure she doesn’t want to stay and see Dot as he knows she’d love to see her. Clare is getting ready to go when Dot arrives. Dot is tickled to see Clare. Jane tells Dot that Clare was just leaving. Dot says, “oh no, she ain’t as she’s just got here!” Dot asks if they mind if she takes Clare off their hands. Jane says to be their guest. Dot quotes the scripture as it’s a miracle that Clare had arrived when she needed her. Jane says, “and to think she almost missed her.”

Shabnam hands her Mum the money she’s been saving for the trip. Her Mum tells her she can’t take it. Zainab decides to take it after Shabs tells her that it’s not all hers. Zainab tells her she knows Shabs wants to go ours with her friends. She was young once too. But she tells Shabs she musn’t ever lie to her again or she’ll be wishing she was with her father in Karachi. She then hands Shabs her passport application and asks if she has something to tell her.

Jack walks into the apartment to find it empty. He calls out for Penny. Selena tells him that she’s gone; that her parents took her early. Selena tells him that he couldn’t have seriously thought their little romp in his office meant anything? She tells him not even he is that good. Selena tells him that he doesn’t need them anymore, he’s got Ronnie now. She tells him that girls like that don’t come along very often. He should take care of her. She kisses him and leaves.

Heather and Hazel are eating chips on the square chatting. Garry sees them and sneaks past to avoid his Mum. Hazel asks if Heather if she’s ever promised someone something, but no matter how hard you try, you end up breaking their heart? Heather tells her about the time she promised to get tickets to the Spice Girls reunion because the first time they missed out because of her Mum’s sciatica. Minty calls Heather. Heather attempts to play it off. Hazel says, “you’re hiding something, aren’t ya?” Heather tries but fails to stop Hazel from heading to the Vic.

Dot and Clare are reminiscing. Clare tells Dot that the next time she is in town, she’ll visit. Clare asks about Ian. Dot tells her about the enterprise Ian has built. Clare changes her mind and says she will stay. She hugs Dot and looks at Ian’s card.

Hazel walks into the Vic to find Peggy and Minty with baby items. Peggy tells her she is so pleased for them. Minty asks Hazel what she thinks. Heather runs in, saying she can’t keep secrets. Hazel looks at them and says she’s sorry. She runs right into Garry spilling his chips all over him. He cries out, “Mum,” and she takes off yelling at him, “why couldn’t you just be happy for me, Garry?” Minty comes out of the pub, and Garry yells at him, asking what he’s said to her? Minty walks over to Hazel, and she tells him that she is so sorry. She tells Minty she isn’t pregnant. He thinks she’s lost it. She tells him no; there never was a baby, it’s the menopause. She says she hates that word. Minty wonders what that means. Hazel tells him that there won’t be a baby, not now, not ever.
