Lucy calls out Steven’s name, and she runs to hug him. He says hello to Peter. He looks at Jane and asks if she is Jane? He says that he is… and shrugs.
Roxy and Ronnie search frantically for the ring. Ronnie is sure that Ben took it. Roxy says it must be there somewhere. Ronnie is not so sure.
Heather and Shirley are standing in front of her doorway. She tells Heather she should go back home. Heather tells her no, this is her bid for independence. She details to Shirley about her mum’s conversation to friends about what a stupid lump she is. Heather tells her she can’t go back home now. Shirley says they can’t kip outside. Heather says she doesn’t mind, it’s not too cold. Shirley asks her how strong she reckons that door is.
Bradley is talking to Max and Stacey looks on. Bradley starts to ask him something but changes his mind. He tells Max to enjoy the home-cooked meal.
Lucy asks Steven why he didn’t let them know he was back. He said he tried, but the phone has been engaged. He asks Jane if there has been any news. Lucy interjects and says that Ian never made it to Africa. Peter says the hotel phoned to say he never checked in. Jane agrees. Steven asks if they’ve gone to the police. She tells him that they have. He wonders what they are going to do about it. Jane tells Steven that they are monitoring his phone, credit cards, and bank. She says that some people need some time away and space. Peter says not dad. Jane agrees but says sometimes they do and she is sure that there is a perfectly reasonable explanation. Lucy says “Hmph, I bet there is,” Jane tells Steven it is lovely to meet him, she just wishes it was under different circumstances. Lucy says that there is a perfectly reasonable explanation. Jane tells Lucy to stop this. Lucy turns to Steven and says this is what she was like before you got here. Jane says “Please!” Lucy says “what? Shut up? NO, I won’t.” Steven interjects and says that “you should have heard her when she was a baby. I had to ask Dad for a pair of headphones the first Christmas after she was born.” Lucy says “Oi,” and Steven hands Peter and Lucy gifts. He says that getting Lucy to shut up is like getting the sun not to rise. She jokingly says shut up to Steven. Peter loves his gift as does Lucy. Jane asks Steven how far he’s come to get there. He says he hitched a ride up from Kent. Peter asks if that is where he’d be living. He says he’s been moving around visiting mates. Jane tells him that dinner will be done soon. Steven says that it is excellent. There is one thing he promised himself he’d do when he got back though.
Bradley and Stacey discuss his wanting to ask Max to be his best man instead of Jim. Stacey tells him Jim will be upset. Afterall he is the one who gave him a roof over his head since he got there. Bradley says no “think about it, Stace. After everything that has happened, it’s going to be me and Dad standing there together, with you. You can’t tell me that doesn’t feel right.”
Ben leaves his room and Roxy catches him in the hallway. She tells him she didn’t tell his Dad secret and then he went and trashed her room. She asks him if he nicked anything from her room. Ben tells her to leave him alone he doesn’t have any secrets and he’s not keeping anything from anyone. Roxy pushes and says well if it weren’t you then it was your little toe-rag friend. She tells him she will keep his secret and Ben goes running off. Ronnie walks up and asks her how she thinks Phil will feel when he comes home and finds his son in that state. She told her to go easy! Roxy says she did but not anymore.
Lauren is on the laptop and Max asks her if she wants pizza. She asks him if he’s ever heard of five a day. He walks in, and she shuts the laptop quickly. He opens it and asks her who they are. She tells him they are just mates. The doorbell rings. It’s Stacey, and she orders Max to turn down the best man role. She can’t have him handing his son the ring to marry his bit on the side. She tells him she is not having it.
Pat comes in and finds Jane setting the table. She tells Jane she was worried about her and thought something terrible had happened. Jane tells her it was just about to, as she thought Lucy was going to explode, but a knight in white armor showed up. She asks where they are. Steven, Lucy, and Peter are in the cafe, and he’s eating a bacon sarnie with tons of ketchup. Lucy asks if their mum sent him.
Jase is working, and Roxy comes in. She unplugs his tool, and he turns and says all right. Jase tells Roxy if she’s eager for that room of hers to be christened he’ll be over in a minute. She asks “where is he?” Jase says where is who? She says that son of yours. He’s got my ring, and I want it back. He asks her how she knows he has it. He asks her if Ben said it. She tells him as good as. He tells her that it’s his son she’s talking about. Roxy tells him that is the only reason she hasn’t gone to the cops. She tells him she wants it back and he needs to sort it. He tells her there is nothing to sort. She tells him he has until six and then I do go to the police. He tells her his son had nothing to do with it. She tells him then he’ll have nothing to worry about.
Shirley and Heather are attempting to bust down the door. Heather says she could go through the window. Shirley reminds her she lives on the second floor. Shirley says it’s no use breaking in as he’ll just send his heavies around to toss them out. Heather says “he wouldn’t do that to a lady?” Shirley says then she’s in trouble. She tells her they need at least a months rent. Heather says she should have said something. Heather says she has some. Heather tells her that her mom only looks after her money because she told her it would be hard enough to find a husband so she might as well save some dosh for her bottom drawer.
Lucy is explaining that is was not just messages, it was pictured too. Peter says it was doctored and not real. Lucy is determined that Ian has left Jane and met up with Cindy. She says that he’s gone to make a better life for them and he’s going to come back and get them. Peter says “with mum?” and Lucy agrees. She thinks that is why Steven has come back and asks if he has been getting messages. He tells her that he just wanted to make sure they were ok. Lucy goes on about how Cindy might have had to go into hiding and all. Peter says their dad wouldn’t have lied to them. Jane comes in and says that the tea is ready. She’s got quite the surprise waiting for him.
Max is walking back into the kitchen to tidy up, and his phone rings. It’s Bradley, and he rejects the call. Lauren walks in and says she’s going round Lucy’s. Max tells her no, and she’s going to help him tidy up. She asks if Lucy can come round theirs and he says no. They need to clean up the mess.
Jase comes in and asks Phil if he can pay him now as he only has about an hour left. Phil tells him then it won’t take him more than an hour. He’s going to go hang out with his son. Roxy walks up and points at her watch to Jase. Ronnie stops Phil from going upstairs and disturbing Ben.
Shirley brings her bags into the pub. She pours the leftover beers and drinks them. Heather sneaks back into her Mum’s, and she is caught. Her mum thinks Shirley has already tossed her out.
Pat hugs Steven and asks him why he didn’t say anything when he phoned. He said it was just a spare of the moment thing. She tells him he could have rung. Jane says she’s been hogging the line. Pat says he could have phoned her. She doesn’t care. She’s just happy to see them all together. She never thought she would see that again. If only… she says as she stares down at Ian and Steven’s photo.
Bradley rings the bell at Max’s and asks him round the pub for a quick drink. He says no he’s got to get the place clean. He says he’ll see Bradley tomorrow. Bradley pushes through and says an extra pair of hands on deck will get it all done.
Phil walks up to the video shop and wonders why Jase said an hour. Jase tells him that he said an hour at the most. Phil goes in and determines if he’s really done.
Pat asks him what he’s up to. He says he’s taking a gap from uni and traveling around. It’s the best education. Pat wonders as she thought the school wasn’t out until Christmas in New Zealand. He tells her this is the best education. Lucy says it must be great being able to travel all about and telling everyone whatever he wants. Pat says she’s a right fantasy merchant. Lucy says she is not the only one as some people can’t see the truth right under their nose. Pat stops her and tells her that her mum is not alive. Peter wonders what if there is no dad too. What if he’s hurt and laying somewhere. Steven stares at the photo of him and Ian again.
Jase gets to the pawn shop, but the broker is leaving. Roxy is at the pub eyeing the clock.
Bradley tells Max they make a good team. Max tells him there isn’t much to pick up a few papers. Bradley says he just means this, being there for each other. He starts to ask him, and Max cuts him off and tells Lauren he’s going to check her room. Bradley continues cleaning up.
Jane is in the kitchen crying. Steven walks in and says he’s sorry about all that stuff Lucy is saying. She says it’s alright. Steven says it’s got to be a lot all these faces from the past showing up. She tells him that she’s glad he’s there. She knows he cares about his dad and all those differences from the past are in the past. He said if he were there now he’d be glad. Steven makes the way to go as he’s uncomfortable. Pat walks in, and Jane solicits her help in getting Steven to stay. Pat says, of course, he should stay.
Jase is chasing the pawnbroker around and yelling at him to give him the ring. The pawnbroker says he’ll get the police. He tells him to give him the ring, and he’ll give him the keys. Roxy walks up and asks what is going on. He tells her that she is his fiance and Jay’s gone and pawned the ring he got for her. The pawnbroker yells at him. Jase says he’s only just found out so what he’s done is come down there and the shop is closed. The pawnbroker says that’s it he’s had enough. Roxy says “that is the best you can do? Do you really think you are going to get away with it with a lie like this? She turns to the pawnbroker and asks him how much he’s paying him to pretend to be a pawnbroker? Jase tells him to go on then… show her! He turns towards the building.
Phil comes upstairs and yells for Ben to tell him what this project is all about. Phil tries the door, and it’s locked. He whispers through the door and asks him what is the matter. He asks him to unlock the door and tell him. Ben unlocks the door
Heather is listening to her mum gloat and whinge about her leaving. Heather finds her passbook and grabs her bags and starts to leave. She has a change of heart until she drops her passbook and is shocked at what she finds.
Max shows Bradley the website Lauren’s been on for hours. He tells him to just look at these photos. Bradley says all the kids are doing the same these days. Max tells him he’s going to go up and have it out with her. Bradley talks him out of it. They head off to get their drink.
Steven is sitting out on the bench, and Pat walks up. He says he just needed to clear his head for a minute. Pat asks him if it’s how he remembers. He says it’s much smaller. She tells him it’s because he got bigger. He says everything looks the same, but nothing is where it was before. Pat says you look away for a minute and everything changes. She tells him that him being there might be good for the twins. She tells him that him being there will help if what they’ve been thinking for the last few days is true, and he’s hurt somewhere. And if it’s true then thank goodness he’s there. He says it doesn’t think Lucy is thinking that way. She tells Steven that Lucy will need him, even more, when she finds out some sicko has been messing with her head. Steven says that he could have just walked out. Pat replies “and leave his family? No, he ain’t the type.” Steven yells back that he left him. Pat corrects him and reminds him that Steven left him. Steven wonders why he never came after him. She tells him that he talked about it loads of times. Steven wonders why didn’t he do it then. Pat tells him that Ian wasn’t quite sure of his welcome especially because of the way it ended between the two of them. She tells him that she always asked after him every time she got back from one of her trips. He wanted to know what you were doing, how you were. You were always his son, his first born she tells Steven. She says somethings change, but that never did.
Bradley and Max are in the pub and Max tries to hurry off. Bradley tells him to just stand still for a minute. Peggy walks up and tells Bradley she has something for him. She hands him a wedding brochure. Stacey comes in and motions for Max to follow. He tells Stacey he can’t do it. She tells him that he will regret it if he does. She reminds him of all the places they were together. Bradley walks up, and Stacey tells him she was just thanking Max for all the help with her mum. Bradley walks up and goes right into asking his Dad to be his best man. Max is speechless, and Bradley says this is a first him being speechless. He looks at Stacey and tells Bradley he can’t do it and walks out. Bradley chases after him.
Jane comes out, and Steven is staring at the house. Jane comes out to bring the garbage to the bins and asks Steven if the sofa is ok. He says it is.
Heather walks into the pub and tells Shirley how her mum took her money. She says she’s down to $400. Shirley grabs her phone. Heather wonders who she’s ringing. Shirley says she’s calling that bloodsucking landlord, Norm. Shirley changes her mind and says that Heather should phone him and tell him she’s heard a flat is just opened.
Jase and Roxy walk into the pub. Jase asks her to think about why Jay pawned the ring. She takes the ring off her finger and sticks it in her back pocket as she glances down at Ronnie. Phil walks up and asks to have a word. She asks what about. Phil just replies Now! They go upstairs, and he’s yelling at her for accusing Ben of stealing. She tells him she caught him red handed. If he took the bra, then he could have taken the ring. It’s worth a lot of money she says, and she wants it back. He says that she made it worse by telling him it would be their little secret. Ronnie is shocked. Roxy says she was trying to spare his feelings but a lot of good it did her because he came and trashed her room. Phil asks her if she gets a kick out of messing with a little kids head? Ronnie defends her. Phil continues. Roxy asks him when he became Mr. Moral Majority. Ronnie tells Roxy and Phil that’s enough.
Steven is sitting in the chair in the family room shaking his legs. He keeps staring at the photo of him and his dad. He finally gets up and turns it down.
