December 30, 2018 Episode 1 (UK Original Air Date September 25, 2007)

Jane records a message on the machine. Lucy and Peter come down and pretend to be sick. Jane tells them they are going to school. She asks them both for their phones and promises not to look at anything. She just wants to check to see if their dad has called. Lucy wonders why he’d call them and not her. Jane says she is not sure she just wondered. Lucy wonders if there is anything that she isn’t telling them.

Phil is trying to eat his breakfast and read the paper. Roxy and Ronnie are yelling at each other through the doors. The come in and agitate Phil. They scream about their bras and Ben looks nervous.

Yolande, Mo, and Billy bet that Ian has left Jane. Jane looks nervous and walks into the cafe. Phil walks up and asks Billy isn’t he meant to be over at the video shop? Billy says he is but first has to borrow Winston’s van to go get stock. Phil wonders how he can run the veg stand and gut the video shop. Billy explains Mo will cover the stall for him while he’s at the video shop.

Bradley walks up to Stacey, and they chat about the wedding. He asks her if she is certain she doesn’t want a Star Wars wedding. She says no. Bradley wonders what she will wear. She says maybe a suit. Mo tells her that old maids who are on their fourth husband wear suits. Mo asks Stacey to come home for lunch today.

Dot and Yolande gossip about what is going on. They think Ian and Jane got in a fight and he’s holed up in a hotel. Dot asks Yolande if she is still wearing her ring. Jane puts and out of order sign on the phone box. Dot and Yolande look at one another.

Shirley’s landlord walks into her bedroom while she’s sleeping. He coughs to wake her up. She wakes to see him standing over her. She asks him if he is enjoying himself. He says he came to remind of her the rent. She says what? You get in bed, and I prostitute myself for a place to stay? He says it will be a mutual arrangement. She tells him she’s doing extra shifts at the Vic and she will give him an extra fifty quid next week. He says no doing as he saw the two birds in the pub last night and she is right out of a job he bets. She asks him if he’s washed recently. He says he has. Shirley agrees to sleep with him. He excitedly gets undressed while she leaves the room. She comes back in fully clothed and grabs all his clothes. He runs after her and sees her toss his clothes out the window. She tells him she might be skint, but she still has an ounce of dignity left. He demands she give him something to put on. She tells him to get out, or she will scream. He says he owns the property and she can’t tell him what to do. She says three and starts to scream.

Jay stops by the shop to see his Dad. He wonders why he hasn’t started. Jase says he needs tools and Billy has them. Ben comes in and says he needs to talk to Jay. Jay asks Ben if he’s seen his Uncle Billy. He says yeah he’s off to get stock for the fruit and veg. Jay looks at his dad and says he’ll see him later. They are walking along, and Ben tells him he needs to put Roxy’s bra back. Jay swings a pink bra around. Ben says she’ll notice it’s gone as she’s sorting through her clothes. Jay tells Ben he will put it back at lunchtime. Jay kicks the clothes in the street, and the landlord comes running out in his underwear and shoes.

The landlord yells up to Shirley that she has until the afternoon to get him her rent. She leans out the window and tosses out the contents of his briefcase and tosses it down as well. People on the street start to laugh at him. Upstairs Shirley is worried.

The ladies are busy gossiping in the cafe. Peggy and Roxy have joined Dot and Yolande. They think he’s left her. Yolande tells Jane she should see about getting the phone repaired. Jane tells her she will get it repaired later. Yolande says it’s no good to her broken. Jane asks why that is. She says in case he calls. Dot says he’s been gone five days. Peggy says “he what?” Jane looks at them and says Ian is on holiday. Peggy commends her for letting him go off on his own. Roxy whispers to the group that he’s left her. Definite. Dot says they’ve only been married a couple of months. Jane stares at them and tosses a plate to the ground. She has their attention and tells the ladies she can hear them. She says it is very generous of her to let Ian go on holiday, but that is just the kind of girl she is. Jane emphatically tells them that Ian has not left her. Pat walks in as all of this transpires. The ladies look at one another.

Billy is back with stock. Jase walks up and asks him weren’t they meant to start at nine. Billy tells him he had to go get stock and he could have started without him. Jase says he needs tools. Billy asks him what kind of chippy he is without tools. Billy says he has tools and goes into the shed to get them. He shows them to Jase. Jase says ok he’ll take them and get started. Billy says no, those are his tools. Jase loses his temper and accuses Billy of working to keep one of his own down. Billy says that Jase isn’t his own. He doesn’t know who Jase is. Jase walks away, and Billy taunts him with “One-nil to the cockney boy” Jase turns around and says he’s biting off more than he can chew. He slams the door of Winston’s van, and Billy points out it isn’t his van. Mo says Jase needs uncorking. Stacey says or locking up.

Jane explains to Pat the new evidence she’s found. Ian is not in South Africa and hasn’t left the country. She shows her the passport. Pat tells her to go to the police. Jane says she has. Pat tells her this is new evidence.

Stacey walks into the house and discovers a room full of 90’s style wedding gowns. She calls her Nan. Mo tells her to try one on. Stacey tells her they are hideous. Mo tells her they are better than a suit and to please try one on for her old Nan.

Heather wonders how Shirley survives on moldy bread and pickles. Heather brings food. Shirley asks for one, but Heather refuses. Heather talks about her mom being ill and all. Shirley asks Heather for money. She finally comes clean that she is skint and will be homeless by the end of the day.

Jane meets with the investigator, and he tells her that they are doing all they can. Jane tells him that everyone suspects he’s left. She asks him what he thinks. He tells her it’s a possibility. She tells him he was being terrorized. He would not have sent those notes to himself to get out a relationship. He tells her it’s in the spectrum. She tells him he wouldn’t have sent himself a coffin. He says people do all sorts to get themselves out of relationships.

Shirley yells at Heather that she is not listening. She tells her that the landlord is going to put her on the streets. Shirley figures heather has a ton of money saved up. She says her mum looks after it. She gets pocket money. Shirley says she gets pocket money at 43. Shirley picks up a photo of the two of them in Brighton. She asks Heather to move in with her. Heather says her mum won’t let her. Shirley asks her if she does know she could have moved out twenty years ago. Heather is hesitant. Shirley grabs her coat to go speak with Heather’s mum.

Mo comes into the video shop to tell Billy he’ll need to come back to his stall. She wants to go look at Stacey in her wedding dress. Billy says he can’t. Jase walks in and sees Billy hasn’t done much. Billy declares himself a craftsman as a board drops down. Jase wishes him luck and walks out. Billy chases after him offering a deal to sell him his tools to do the job, and he can have the whole job. Jay and Ben walk up and overhear the conversation. Jase says he will do it and he’ll pay Billy when Phil pays him. Billy asks him if he looks simple. He tells him he will do the job and Billy will never see the money or his tools. He says the deal is off. Jay looks worried. Roxy walks up and says hello.

Jane is walking back from the police, and everyone stares at her. She yells at them to stop it as it feels like they are stalking her. Gina walks up to Roxy and asks her if that is Ian’s wife. Roxy says it is.

Jay is in Roxy’s room and going through her things. He sprays perfume in his eye. He puts lipstick on his hand and says “come on kiss me, a bad boy. I thought your dad was fit, but you are better fit” and pretends to kiss himself with his hand. Roxy walks up to find Ben outside her door and rustling noises from her room. She asks where Jay is. Ben says he’s in the toilet. She opens her door, and no one is there. She tells Ben not to stand there it looks a bit weird. Inside the room, Jay is on the floor. He finds a diamond ring on the floor in her handbag.

Pat is on the phone with Stephen. He hasn’t heard from Ian. Jane tells Pat the police think he’s left her. Jane starts to believe what the police said. Pat says it’s Ian they are talking about. Pat picks up a photo of a girl, and on the back, it says “We’re here if you need us C and G” Jane goes running out the door after Gina. She wonders who the hell she is. Pat calls out Gina’s name. The gossips are a buzz.

Ben wonders why Jay didn’t put the bra back. Jay begs off and says he will see him later. Jay walks to Billy and asks about the tools. Billy is rude and asks if his dad sent him to beg off him. Jay tells him they don’t beg. He tells Jay he might lend his dad his junior hacksaw. Jay tells him to keep selling his banana’s and thinking he’s funny.

Gina says “you must be Jane.” Jane wonders what the picture was about. She says she wanted Peter and Lucy to know about their half-sister. Jane says “oh right you haven’t bothered sending one for years and all the sudden you want to show up.” Jane asks if she knows where Ian is. She says she gets the feeling Ian has gone missing. She said when he came to see her it stirred up old emotions. He wasn’t the man he remembered. He was on edge. Jane says that is because he was getting messages from his dead ex-wife.

The doorbell buzzes and Stacey yells at the door wondering if her Nan ever remembers her keys. She wonders where her mate got the dresses from. Stacey opens the door, and it’s Jean. Jean is taken aback. Mo walks up and asks if she’s invited her mum around for viewing too. Jean looks at her. Mo guesses she hadn’t. Mo runs away.

Gina says she will leave Pat and Jane to it. Jane tells her she doesn’t believe she came to see her aunt. Gina says she left her mobile at home and the pay phone appears to be broken. Jane lays down all the mobiles and tells her to use one of these. Gina tells her she doesn’t have to prove anything to her. Jane tells her she doesn’t believe there is an aunty and she’s come around sniffing after a married man who has already blown you out twice. Gina tells her she is clearly speaking from the point of security. Jane tells her that he is not interested in you Gina. Get over it! Gina tells her that she got over it a long time ago. Gina says “I know Ian. He goes for naughty blonde girls, not boring housewives.” Jane makes a go to hit Gina. Pat keeps her back. Gina says he got bored with Mrs. Homely. Jane tells her she will get Mrs. Homely’s fist in her face. Gina replies how utterly unlike Cindy she is. Jane kicks her out of the cafe and tells her she is sick of her and her dead sister. Gina tells her that Cindy was well loved around there. Jane tells her that he’s never going to be with her. Gina replies that it doesn’t look like he’s with Jane either.

Jean and Stacey talk about the dresses. She shows Stacey the Star Trek books she’s gotten. Stacey apologizes, and Jean replies that Sean must have been joking then. Jean asks about the dresses and Stacey explains that some dodgy friend of Nan’s did this. They stink of mothballs. Jean says they are a bit dated. Stacey offers to take off the one she’s in and make a cup of tea. Jean tells her she wants to see her try the rest of them on. She owes her a laugh. Stacey shows her the one she doesn’t mind and asks her mum to make the alterations.

Jase is sitting outside the shop. Jay walks up with the tools. Jase tells him he can’t just knick them. Jay tells him he didn’t and he bought them. He tells his dad to call Billy if he doesn’t believe him. Jase wonders where he got the money. Jay tells him his Nan set him up a savings account. Jay says he’ll see his dad later.

Jane is in the house, and Pat knocks on the window. She tells her that Gina was just winding her up. She bangs on the window and calls out Janes name. Jane picks up the answering machine and tosses it.

Heather and Shirley are waiting for Queenie. Queenie yells at Heather she took her time with the shopping as she expected her back three hours ago. She goes through the bag and wonders where the things she asked for are. Heather tells her she got peckish. Quennie yells at her and calls her a fat ugly pig. Shirley speaks up. Queenie tells her she thought she’d been run over. She tells Heather that the sheer sight of her makes her want to bring her breakfast up. Shirley jumps up and says that Heather is coming with her to live. Queenie says “oh is she now. I don’t know how she’s going to pay her way as she got the sack three weeks ago!” Shirley looks at Heather shocked.

Stacey comes in to show her mum the one she likes and finds Jean is gone.

The phone rings and Pat answers. It’s Stephen. She tells him that his Aunty Gina had been round. She says it’s starting to look like Ian might have left Jane. (They pan to Jane weeping holding Ian’s jumper) Stephen says “Poor woman,” He asks about Peter and Lucy. She says they think he’s on holiday. Pat tells him it is dawning on all of them that Ian might be gone for a while. She says he may even turn up in New Zealand. Stephen tells her he is not in New Zealand. He’s here in England and has been for a few weeks. He’s been catching up with old mates. He kisses a locket and looks forward with an intense stare.
