Denise, Kevin, Chelsea, and Dean come in from their first court appearance. Kevin tells them to hold onto hope. Dean says it’s like “My Cousin Vinny” and just when they think they are going down, boom the judge lets them off. Chelsea says they are clutching at straws. Kevin thinks Dean is holding strong. Dean goes into the living room to call Shirley. Denise comes in looking for the paper. She leaves, and he calls Shirley. He tells her he hasn’t changed his mind. She tells him to give her a bit to get things sorted and get to the cash point. Shirley tells him it won’t be much.
Shirley is on the phone with Dean when Phil walks in. He slept there on Shirley’s insistence to keep him from bunking in the arches. She mentions that Peggy doesn’t pay her much. He tells her he’ll sort her out. She asks him how long he’s staying for, but Phil doesn’t respond.
Jane is running around getting everyone ready for school while Ian stares at the photo of Cindy. Jane tells him to stop staring at it as it’s creeping her out. Bobby tries to play with his Dad, but Ian ignores him. He asks Jane what is wrong with him when he walks away. Jane says “I don’t know. Maybe it’s because you have said two words to him all weekend. You have a family you know!” Ian grabs the photo, and as Jane walks away, he rips it in half.
Dean carries his backpack downstairs narrowly missing Kevin seeing him. He quickly hides it beside the sofa. Kevin offers to spend the day with him. Kevin sends him out to the market to work up an appetite. Dean is stopped from leaving just yet.
Jane and Ian are walking to the cafe. He’s gotten sunflowers for the tables. Bobby yells out red. Jane suggests red roses and Ian says no. Jane asks him if he’s beyond the paranoia and he tells Jane he is.
Ben is packing for school. Peggy says she can make a special meal of bangers and mash for tea. Ben asks if his dad is angry with him. Peggy says of course not. Ronnie and Roxy knock on the door and say that there is a special visitor there. Peggy asks if he’s been drinking. They tell her that they would not have let him in if he had. Phil comes to the door and tells her he hasn’t had a drop all weekend. Peggy tells him not now. He asks how Ben is feeling. Peggy replies he has to take it easy. He’s going to school for half a day. Phil asks to take him, but Ben quickly says that his Gran is doing it. Phil says that maybe he will see him later then. Ben hurries his Gran up and doesn’t speak to Phil.
Dean watches as Kevin walks out of the house. Jase is walking by the fruit and veg when Honey offers some fruit to him. Billy doesn’t want to do it. Honey tells him to do it. Billy rudely offers him the bruised fruit. Jase turns it down and walks away. Honey can’t believe Billy. He says that he doesn’t like him because he’s arrogant. Honey says that is exactly why she thought they’d get along since they have that in common.
Dean is making his way to the house when he spots Sean. They stare at one another, and Dean walks off. Dean gets to the house, and inside he finds Denise and Chelsea. He says he forgot his phone when they ask what he’s doing back. Chelsea points out it’s in his pocket. They bicker, and Denise put a stop to it. He wonders where Kevin is. Denise tells him since he’s got his lunch all sorted he’s gone to find Dean a new brief. Denise tauntingly says he can’t do enough for Dean.
Kevin is at the Shirley’s looking for Phil. Peggy sent him that direction. He’s there to ask if he can point him in the direction of a good brief. Kevin annoys Phil and Phil finally tells him the name of a solicitor. Phil seems to be struggling not to drink. Kevin thanks him and says “you got to earn that dad title somehow,”
Max comes into the cafe and asks Ian if he’s got a new vocation. Ian tells him, no, but he does find it quite satisfying. Max says he’s there because he got a note under his door pointing him in Ian’s direction about life insurance. Ian plays it off as a joke by Peter.
Kevin chats up Dean about his new solicitor. Dean tells him he should go down and check on Pat at the car lot. Kevin says she can handle it. Shirley waits for Kevin to leave. She asks him how he’ll make it. Dean tells him he will get a job. He’ll be like Tom Cruise in Cocktail. Shirley isn’t convinced. She tells him this will be hard. Dean asks her to do him a favor.
Honey and Billy come in and find Jase sitting there. Honey has encouraged Billy to apologize and to buy Jase a drink. Billy isn’t exactly keen to keep his bargain. Jase isn’t welcome to the idea either. Honey convinces them to get one drink, and if they don’t get on then, she will let sleeping cats lie. They head off to the Vic for a drink.
Peggy comes out of the living room to find Phil. Phil tells her he hasn’t had a drink since Ben’s episode. She is not convinced. Phil asks if he can pick Ben up from school. She isn’t sure. He says that maybe he can take him around so they can kick the football together. Peggy says neither of them are up to running around. Phil tells her he is on the wagon. She isn’t sure he will stick to it, and the bar is getting busy. She tries to push by, but Phil stops her and says he knows he’s screwed up, but he wants to spend time with him. He pleads, and she agrees to half an hour.
Shirley comes to Kevin’s and distracts him with a bunch of questions. She heads to Pat’s bar to grab another bottle of wine for Kevin. She grabs Dean’s passport and shoves it in her pocket quickly before Kevin can see. She hands him the wine he was looking for. Deans backpack is in plain sight.
Billy and Jase share a drink. Billy tries to give him advice about work and raising a family. Jase grabs his coat and drink and heads down to the other end of the bar.
Jane tells Ian that Bobby was so happy. Ian goes back into the cafe to find all the tops of the flowers cut off. Mo didn’t see a thing.
Shirley and Dean walk back to the market stall. She tells him to ring her when he gets there. Sean walks up as Shirley walks off. He wonders if Dean missed him. Sean says we’ll have to do something about that. In the house, Kevin finds Dean’s backpack. He puts it all together.
Honey comes back to the bar, and Billy tries to explain Jase walked away and isn’t talking to him. Honey buys them a round of drinks and sends Jase back over. Max walks up, and Jase asks him if he’s sorted his daughter out. Max says he has but to remember that sometimes interfering makes it worse. Billy asks if Jay is being bullied. Jase tells him sort of. Billy says he’s been dreading that happening to his Janet. Billy tells Jase that if his boy is getting grief, of course, he has to put a stop to it.
Dean is looking at the train tickets when Kevin comes in. He tells him it didn’t take much to figure it out. Kevin wonders what he was going to do? Give him a call later after making his great escape? Kevin says that getting advice from Shirley is not the best. He begs him not to do a runner. Dean says he’s embarrassing him. Kevin tells him he doesn’t care about public humiliation. He yells out to the crowd that his son is about to do a runner. Dean tells him that Sean is still after him and he’s still going down. He tells Kevin he’s scared. Kevin tells him he’ll speak to SEan. He says Sean won’t listen. Dean tells him he’s worried about what will happen in prison. Kevin tells him that he loves him and he will do what he can. They hug and head out.
Phil and Ben come into the cafe. Ben wants to go home and doesn’t want to spend time with Phil. Phil asks him to give him a few minutes. He asks Ben how his stomach is. Ben tells his dad that he doesn’t want him to get sick. Phil tells him he won’t. He’s got to stick around for Ben. He tells Ben that he’s sorry and he never meant those words he said to him. Ben tells him he was right, and he is a crybaby. Phil tells him that he wishes he had half of the guts Ben has. Ben says “really?” Phil tells him “really.” Ben softens, and Phil asks if he’d like to kick around the football now. Ben asks him if he can tell him something without him getting angry. Phil says of course. Ben tells him he doesn’t like football anymore. Phil smiles and says they better take a look at his homework then. Ben smiles a big smile.
Ian and Bobby are walking, and Ian is explaining why veg will be better than the flowers. He breaks down and tells Bobby he’s sorry. He asks him if he wants ice cream. Bobby happily says yes. Ian reaches into his pocket and yells ouch. He pulls out a red rose with thorns. Bobby says “you hate red.” Ian replies that he knows someone who didn’t.
Kevin is chatting with Sean about leaving Dean alone. He hopes they can come to a civilized arrangement. Kevin says that the courts will sort Dean out and all. Sean thanks him for restoring his faith in the legal system. Kevin tells him he thought it would be tougher to crack him. Sean says “believe it or not. I do have a life.” Sean walks into the Vic and Kevin gives Dean the thumbs up. Kevin yells at Shirley as she walks by. He tells her he thought they were on the same team. She tells him that he can’t handle it, glancing at Dean. Kevin tells her to go back to being a part-time mom.
Sean slams his glass down on the bar. Peggy wonders what’s wrong with him. He tells her it’s nothing he can’t handle. Down on the other end, Jase and Billy are getting along discussing their kids. Billy invites Jase and Jay over for tea one night. Jase tells him to calm down; he’ll be giving him half decent apples soon. Billy spies a paper in Jase’s pocket, and it’s a parole paper. He reads it and puts it back.
Phil and Ben come back to the Vic and Ben is very happy. Phil tells him maybe they can choose a new hobby to do together. Ben asks if he can choose. Phil tells him, of course, he can. Peggy and Roxy greet them. Ben’s excited about dinner and is glad they weren’t late. Phil chats with Peggy about moving back in. She tells him to wait and see what tomorrow brings.
Denise and Chelsea are on the sofa watching TV. Kevin asks them if they are up for a pork ball? Denise says he’s a bit chirpy. Kevin tells them he’s had a productive day and sorted a new brief. Kevin convinces them to get a takeaway.
Dean comes out of the public bathroom stall to find Sean standing there.
Bobby and Ian are walking towards the market stalls when a car comes barreling by nearly hitting Ian. The car stops then takes off. Ian is frazzled. He checks on Bobby. He tells Bobby that it was just a silly accident.
Kevin calls Dean but Sean answers. Kevin asks him where Dean is. Sean says “good question!” He’s stuffing Dean’s head in the toilet. Kevin calls back and Sean answers. Kevin demands to know where Dean is. Kevin hears the flushing of the toilets and takes off running.
Phil is in Shirley’s flat pouring out his vodka. She asks if he is officially on the wagon. He says yes he is. She wonders if this means she gets her spare bed back. He says he hopes. Ben calls Phil and says that Gran told him his dad was coming home tomorrow. Ben hopes it’s true. Phil says it is. Ben tells his dad he loves him. Phil tells Ben he loves him too. They both smile wide smiles.
Kevin finds Sean and Dean in the bathroom. He wants to know where Dean is. Sean tells Kevin he makes a lot of assumptions “not a scratch on him!” He tells Kevin his precious son won’t be that lucky in prison. Kevin tells him if he’s hurt his son he’ll kill him. Sean tells him that he’d like to see as he walks out. Kevin walks to the stall and pushes the door open. Dean is on the floor crying.
Ian tells Jane about the incidents from today, and she’s worried. Ian tells her whoever is doing it is trying to wind him up. A red rose in his pocket and nearly being run over in the spot where Cindy shot him. He tells her it is not going to work. There is a knock at the door, and Ian calls up to Bobby as it’s probably Charlie with the veg to plant. Ian opens the door to find a coffin with his name on it. He looks out the gate but sees no one. The note says “On the Death of Ian Beale- My condolences.”
