Pat comes downstairs and calls out to see if anyone is home. She cranks up the music, puts on her apron and opens the fridge.
Keith opens the fridge and pulls out spoiled milk. He takes a drink anyway. He looks at the dog and says he’s on his own. Mickey comes in and asks if there is any breakfast. Keith tells him, no, and Mickey replies that he’s skint. Dawn comes down and when Summer starts to cry Keith comments on what she needs to do. Dawn gets angry and tells Keith he can do it since everyone seems to be better at this than she is! She storms out.
Garry and Minty are walking round the square. Garry is going on about Brighton. Garry asks Minty if he gets the feeling they’re being watched. Behind a stall, Heather peeks around at Garry.
Pat is singing on the radio as she finishes her breakfast. As she’s singing and enjoying herself, Kevin walks in. She tells him that she thought everyone was out. He says he likes to run around naked when he’s home alone. He says he finds it quite liberating. Kevin sorts through the mail and finds one addressed to Pat Harris. She opens it and is visibly upset.
Garry and Minty are enjoying breakfast. Garry asks him if he’s interested. Minty asks in what? Garry says about going away. Minty tells him that he can’t go, as he’s doing a course. Garry asks where and when MInty replies he wonders if he’d already done one there. Minty tells him that it’s an advanced course. Minty makes his way off quickly. Garry sits down with Dawn and offers to do something altogether with her and Summer. She says yes.
Mickey asks how long Ray’s ice cream van will be out in front of the house. Keith says until he gets back. Kids bang on the door of the van. Keith yells that they are closed due to the holidays. Minty gets an idea and asks Keith if he has any money. Keith has a fiver, and Mickey takes it and heads off.
Dawn and Garry are walking discussing where they will get off to. Garry mentions Brighton, his old stomping grounds, and Dawn is keen on the idea. Meanwhile Heather is watching from behind a parking meter. Garry says if they get a move on they can make a day of it. Dawn says why don’t they just stay over. Garry spots Heather and tells her that he can see her. She tells him she has a coupon. He takes it and thanks her stating he and MInty can use it. She tells him she would prefer if he went with her. He breaks it to her that he is not interested and is heading to Brighton. She asks if he’s going with that skinny little thing. He says “you mean Dawn? Yes, yes I am!” She asks him if they are courting. Garry replies that they are in a roundabout way. He starts to walk off, and she asks for her coupon back.
Minty’s put on aftershave too soon after a close shave and is wincing from a bit of pain. He’s excited about heading off to his course and grabs a bottle of champagne. Garry comes in, and he hides the bubbly from him. Garry notices he’s had a shave and Minty giggles he has. Garry notices he’s a bit off and asks if he’s excited to make a good first impression on his new course mates. Minty replies that he is. He grabs his bag, drops the bubbly in and heads out. He forgets his course material, and Garry hands it to him.
Pat is on the phone and no one on the other end answers. She runs out to Kevin to ask to use a car. He wonders if she is ok, as it’s been a long time since anyone has called her Pat Harris. Pat answers that she is ok, but she needs to get down to Brighton. Kevin asks her to wait a day, and they can all go together. She tells him she can’t and needs to go today. He gives her a car, and she’s grateful.
Heather is waiting on Shirley’s doorsteps. She begins to whinge to Shirley about how she had a coupon and all. She tells her that she really thought he was the one after meeting him at her party. She can’t stop thinking about him with his dimples and his funny hair. Shirley makes out that it is Garry. Shirley tells her to do what she always does, get him drunk and lay one on him. Heather tells her that he doesn’t have eyes for her because she is fat and a waste of space. He only wants that scrawny bimbo. Shirley turns and yells at her that she is not a waste of space. Heather says she thinks she loves him. Shirley asks her how many times they’ve been down this path. Shirley agrees to help her. Heather tells her that they can’t take the train as they make her claustrophobic. Shirley wonders why they’d need the train. Heather tells her they have to get to Brighton.
Garry arrives to pick up Dawn and Summer. He says that babies don’t travel light, do they? Keith tells Garry that Summer is staying with him. Garry thinks that it would be a good mother-daughter bonding opportunity. Keith agrees. Dawn comes out telling Keith she’s written a list and all. Keith tells her something has come up and he can’t watch Summer. Dawn is deeply disappointed as she was thinking she’d have a carefree escape. She doesn’t understand why he can’t, but he tells her he has to help a mate. Garry takes Summer and says he will help her pack. Mickey arrives, and Keith has a grand idea that he can get Summer a cot. Mickey reminds him they have no money. Mickey says after his bright idea he can help with that. They are wasting a grand opportunity with the ice cream van sitting there.
Shirley comes to the car lot all smiles. Kevin knows she’s up to something no good. Shirley asks Kevin to borrow a motor. He wonders out loud if he’s meant to be loaning them out instead of selling them. She tells him she needs a car as Heather can’t get on the train and she’s got to get her down to Brighton. Shirley gives him her word she’ll bring it back, but Kevin doesn’t trust her. Shirley thinks she’s got Kevin to agree. He tells her no she must think he’s soft. He tells her that Pat has already beat her to it anyway. Shirley gets it out of him where Pat is heading. She races off to Pat’s to catch a lift.
Keith and Mickey are heading off to sell the ice cream. Keith turns on the music and Mickey grimaces.
Shirley asks Pat to bury the hatchet and all. She asks Pat if they can catch a ride. Pat tells her no. Heather and Shirley head to the chip shop. Heather wonders what will become of her. Will she end up alone. Up ahead they spot Pat stalled in traffic. Shirley sees an opportunity to get a ride after all. Shirley goes up to Pat and offers to help her. Pat asks her what’s in it for her. Shirley tells her a ride. Pat says no thanks. Shirley turns and walks away leaving her to it. Pat agrees to give her a ride in exchange for help. Shirl sweet talks the gentleman, and he moves. Shirley walks back to Pat, but Pat takes back her offer. Shirley, however, has grabbed the letter Pat received. Pat is angry, and Shirley teases her as she starts to read it. Pat agrees to give them a lift to get her to stop.
Down in Brighton Garry is excited, and Dawn looks exhausted.
Keith and Mickey are all set up at the park. Mickey’s made a sign and Keith prepares to take a nap. Mickey asks him to come round the back. Seems Keith forgot to plug in the freezer.
Pat, Shirley, and Heather are lost. They are pulled over on the side of the road bickering about which way they should have gone. Heather’s phone rings and it’s her mum. She asks Shirley what she should do. Shirley grabs it, turns it off and tosses it back. Pat and Shirley both take a puff off of their cigarettes. Shirley reckons it’s someone special waiting on her in Worthy. Pat tells her just because she’s giving her a lift doesn’t mean she wants to talk to her. Shirley thinks its a bloke. Pat tells her no. Shirley wonders if it’s not a bloke then it’s someone really special. Just then Heather starts screaming as a bug is in the car. Pat asks her what the hell is wrong with her. Heather screams its a wasp. Pat looks at Shirley likes he’s mad.
Garry and Dawn arrive at the hotel, and there is only one room. He pays for it after he’s mouthed off about the price. Dawn walks off without Summer. Garry asks her if she’s forgetting something. She frowns.
Meanwhile, Minty arrives in Brighton with flowers and champagne as he opens the door, speaks Italian and smiles. Dawn opens the door, and the room is nice. Dawn is upset that there is no tub. She warns Garry off from trying anything. He promises not to. Dawn looks at Summer and says “all I can see is his face.”
Pat asks Heather how long she’s known, Shirley. She says since they were kids. Pat asks her what she does. Heather tells her she works at the market, but not at the counter. She is excited about an opening in the cheese department. Heather asks if they are stopping for food soon. Pat doesn’t intend to. Shirley tells Pat that Heather is hypoglycemic and must eat. Pat is not happy about it but turns to stop.
Keith is cramming melted ice cream and chocolate into cones, trying to make something out of his mess. Mickey wonders why they can never come out on top. Keith wonders what he’s talking about. Mickey wonders if he ever thinks about Mum. He tells him every day. But he’s got the kids, and that is enough. Mickey tells him he’s always a glass is half full kind of guy as a customer walks up to buy a cone.
Pat and Shirley are chatting. Pat notices that Heather really likes her food. Shirley defends her and says Heather says it’s because of her glands. Shirley says that Heather has been a good mate to her. Pat thinks Shirley was almost human! Pat notices some boys playing, and she remembers how she used to take her boys to the shore. She tells Shirley she wouldn’t know anything about that though would she? Heather gives her a mean look. Pat excuses herself to go to the ladies. Shirley hands Pat her handbag in a nice gesture. As soon as Pat is out of eyesight Shirley gets up and tells Heather to come on. Heather wants to know what she’s supposed to do about her grub. Shirley tells her to leave it as she has a much better idea.
Garry is chatting to Summer as he changes her nappy. Dawn comes out and asks if they are going just to sit around all day. Garry says no no, let’s go down to the shore. Dawn walks out and leaves him to gather Summer and her things.
Shirley and Heather get in the car, but it won’t start. They ask a man nearby to help them. He agrees to give them a push. Shirley orders Heather to get out and help him.
Mickey and Keith are going to paint Summers room. The only problem is the paint is blue.
Down on the pier, Garry is eating cotton candy, and Dawn is walking behind him and Summer. He wonders if Summer is too young to go on a donkey or build a sand castle. Dawn spies two cute guys and flirts. She tells Garry that it’s a good idea if he and Summer go off on their own for a few hours. She turns and walks away. Garry calls after her.
Pat comes out and sees Heather and Shirley driving away. She screams “Oi that is my car!”
