It is Phil and Stella’s big day. The square is gently waking up when a slew of cats hiss at each other. Ben is awake in his bed and stirs as he hears the television. He walks in on Stella scratching her hand. He turns to leave, and she softly says ” Couldn’t you sleep either? Scary isn’t it? Big day”
Across the square, at Minty and Garry’s apartment, Phil is complaining about the cats out in the square having a fight and screeching. Phil gets up and says he needs his kip. Minty moans about something, and Phil gets up and gets dressed.
Stella tells Ben about the film she’s watching is Pretty in Pink. It’s one of her favorites. She loves to watch it and used to watch it over and over again as a teenager. She goes on about how Ben made her very angry trying to run away with Abi. Ben defends Abi. Stella focuses on the film again and then goes to sit in front of the tv talking about how the girl goes from a nobody to the belle of the ball. It’s going to be her she says once that ring is on her finger. Ben is staring at her. Stella asks him what it is? He tells her that it’s wrong what she’s doing to him. She glares at him. Outside Phil is walking across the square and tries to break the cats fighting up. Phil glances up towards the sitting room and sees the light on.
Back inside there is a clock ticking loudly as Stella looks at Ben and asks him if this is another chance for him to grasp the limelight? Ben says he knows now. Stella tells him “can’t I have just one day where I’m the only one that matters? What a selfish little showoff you are.” Ben tells her that he doesn’t want her to be his mum. Stella reminds him that his mum is dead and in the ground. Ben tells her that his mum watches over him. Stella pipes back that she can see the things that happen to him, and she understands because she knows it is all part of growing up. Ben yells that it is not part of growing up and calls out for his Gran. Stella grabs him and places her hands over his mouth to keep him quiet as she drags him off to his room. Outside Phil makes his way into the Pub
Stella throws Ben on his bed. She yells quietly “what do you think will happen if you say those things about me?” Ben says his dad will get rid of her! Stella tells him no that’s not right he’ll listen to the person he trusts more in this world and loves. She says to Ben “He loves me. He loves me more than he loves you.” Ben tells her that he is not listening to her anymore. She tells him “alright, I wasn’t going to say anything, but your dad told me a secret about your sister Louise. Louise’s mum didn’t take her away. Your dad sent her away because she spoiled things and got in the way.” Ben says he doesn’t believe her. Stella says now he’s happy, happy that she’s gone. She tells Ben that the only reason he’s putting up with him is that she is there. Ben’s only hanging on by the skin of his teeth. Now he wants to ruin his happy day? Another child spoiling things? He keeps the phone number of the home with him at all times. Ben is crying as he hears Phil. Stella says that someone has told Phil what he’s been saying! She runs to the window and says there’s a black car out there and it’s come to get him. Ben pleads no. She tells him to hide under the covers and pretend he’s asleep quickly. She rushes out of the room. She asks Phil what he’s doing there. He says he saw the light on upstairs. She says he shouldn’t be here; it’s unlucky. He asks her what she’s doing sitting up watching a film. She says yes, she couldn’t sleep as she is too excited. He asks her where she was coming from. She says their bedroom. He says “I thought you said you couldn’t sleep?” She tells him that she was trying and nervously laughs. He asks her if Ben was watching the film with her. She tells him no that he’s fast asleep. Phil says he wants to check on him. He goes in, and Ben is hiding fearfully under the covers. Stella grabs Phil and tells him he can see him later. Phil asks her to look after him and kisses her. Stella watches as Phil leaves. She walks into Ben’s room, and he’s looking out the window and finds there is no car. He tells her that she is lying, she is always lying all the time. He says he hates her and runs for his door yelling for his Dad. She tosses him on the bed and tells him to listen to her. He gets up and pounds on the window calling for his dad. Phil looks up but doesn’t see anything. Stella tells Ben that after today it will all end. She tells him that once they are married everything stops, and it will all be over. There is no need for him to be frightened anymore. She tells Ben that they will be the end of it, that they will be a family. She swears on his life.
Outside the square is coming alive. Kevin and Denise are walking across the square, and she is wondering why Mrs. Masood has not said anything yet. Gus says that an animal has been hit over by the tube. He wonders if it might be Wellard. Jay is talking to the gang of boys, and they are cheering him on for the things he said to Yolande. He says she deserved it. They ask him to go check out a bike in the park. They head off as Yolande watches him. She tells Patrick he is walking around like he doesn’t have a care for anyone. She goes on about what they’ve done for him. Patrick says he was trying to impress his friends. Yolande says she can’t believe she goes away and comes back and the first thing that happens is that her color is used against her. Patrick tries to calm her down with the fact that he hears something derogatory daily about his color. He says that she can’t take on them all. He asks what she wants? An apology? She says yes that is precisely what she wants.

Sal says there is settling down and then there is giving up. Tanya shouts that they can hear them. Sal peeks back in and introduces herself. Sal muddles it all up, and Stella looks nervous.

Phil says he must be happy for him marrying Stella. Abi is coming out as Phil is getting in the car. Ben looks pleased. Ben tells Abi to leave him alone. She asks him why he hasn’t said anything.
Upstairs in the pub, Stella is gushing on about how she loves Peggy’s family, loves saying The Mitchells. She says she hopes she’s not a let down to the name. Sal points out that she will never be a real Mitchell. Stella is taken aback. Peggy says that’s not true. Sal says she doesn’t mean it in a wrong way. She implies that Stella is a bit too sophisticated, too posh and different to be a Mitchell. Peggy drags Sal out. Tanya tells her to ignore them. They are just like her Aunties always going on about stuff. Tanya finishes with one hand and asks for the other. Stella doesn’t want to give her that right hand. As she does Tanya notices the blood and wound. Stella says it was an insect bite and she’s scratched it too much. Tanya goes on, and Stella tells her that she doesn’t want her to do her nails anymore. She says they look a bit too fake. Tanya tells her that she’s already stuck half of them on the one hand. Stella sends her away, and Tanya reminds her she hasn’t done her makeup. Stella says she will do her makeup. Tanya says Abi might be right about her after all. Ben walks in and says that Abi is not and she’s a stirrer. Stella is happy to see Ben.

He adds in that if God knows where his dog is to give him a sign. Just then Wellard barks. They are outside of the shed and about to kick the door in when a dog walks around the corner.
Abi is there to greet Ben as he’s leaving for the wedding. She asks him why he hasn’t said anything. Ben tells her that Stella says it’s all going to stop once they are married. Abi asks him if he believes her. He does. She asks him how stupid he is. He tells her to stop. She says or what? You and Smeller are going to kill me? She tries to go in and report on Stella, and he puts her in the keg room. He locks her in. Ben comes back and brings Abi crisp. He says he doesn’t know what to do. Abi implores him to tell as it’s mental and physical abuse. He has to show. Stella is looking for Ben, and they run before she finds him. Abi gives a stone of courage and tells him that it will make him brave. If it doesn’t work, he can toss it at her head. Ben walks and hears Stella’s craziness in his head as the car pulls up. Stella comes rushing out of the pub and shows Ben her nails. She asks if he saw them all looking at her.

She grabs him and shoves him in a corner. She tells him “I will kill you in your sleep if you don’t walk through that door. I will come to you in the middle of the night and suffocate you and your daddy will find your little dead body in the morning, and he will have to bury you in the ground just like your mummy.” She realizes she’s been forcing her nails in him. She stands up and tells him to straighten himself up.
