Mo is questioning Stacey about her and Bradley’s late night. Stacey doesn’t want to talk about it. Bradley glances down at a bracelet as he prepares for his day.
Peggy is questioning Phil about why the caterers are on for that afternoon. Phil states he’s throwing a proper engagement party for Stella. Peggy asks him if everything is alright between the two of them and he says yes. Peggy asks him what she should do for this party. Phil tells her to gather as many people as she can, especially Ian.
Bradley sneaks up on Stacey. She’s fed up with her Nan doing her head in and to leave it. She’s fed up with everyone talking about them. Bradley calms her down. Stacey scowls as he walks away.
Pat walks into the laundrette, and she and Dot discuss the right to smoke at work being gone. Pat asks her to please get her washing done. Dot goes on and on about the loss of the right to smoke. Pat reminds her she won’t be able to enjoy one in the Vic either.
Phil shows Stella the invitation to the wedding. She tells him she’s sorry. He says it’s time to meet the in-laws. She puts him off from meeting them. He surprises her by telling her that they are going to see them and he’s spoken to her mum. She is shocked. He says she was happy to hear from him and he doesn’t see the problem. Stella looks alarmed.
Peggy is walking thru the market stalls, and Shirley asks her for a pay advance. Peggy is looking up at the Vic construction. She asks Shirley if she’s met a bar of soap recently. Shirley tells her that is part of the problem. The plumbing is broken, the landlord is in Spain, and she can’t do anything until she gets paid. Peggy tells her that she can’t afford to sponsor her staff’s social life. But she helps her after Pat walks up. Pat mentions the lack of smoking in the Vic and Peggy isn’t worried because where else will they get a drink.
Li is curious as to who is messaging Mickey. He’s got a client for $200 massage, and he could do it this one last time. Li walks out angry
Stella and Phil pull up to her parent’s house. Stella is worried about it and wants him to understand her upbringing. She’s trying to prepare him, and he’s worried they won’t approve. She tells him not at all; it’s sometimes parent’s don’t act as they should.
Li takes the sheets into the laundrette and tells Dot Mickey needs them back ASAP. Li is upset with him. Mickey is upset as well.
Stella and Phil are escorted to the sitting room by her Mum. Stella is uncomfortable and forgets to take off her jacket. Her mum makes her stand up and take it off. Her Mum talks about how she’d rather be in the south of France, but her husband is still tied to his work. She makes small talk about his career. She sits down with them and calls Phil “Phillip” and Stella corrects her. Stella speaks for Phil, and her mum interrupts her and repeatedly calls him Phillip. Phil tells her he runs a myriad of businesses, but he’s a mechanic by trade. Stella’s mum goes on about how useful that is. She offers up tea and asks Phil what kind he would like, and he asks for Builders. She gets a twinkle in her eye and heads out to make the tea.
Honey chats up Stacey about how nice it is that she and Bradley are in love and Dot reckons it’s going well. Dot is outside stamping out a cigarette.
Back at Stella’s parent’s house, Phil is looking at family photos. He picks up one that is her sister. She says yes it is. He asks if it’s the one that he went to see for Christmas. She doesn’t answer, and her mum walks back in with the tea. She says that yes that is a photo of Stella’s’ sister Catherine. Stella interrupts by saying that they are getting married. Her mum says ” oh so another try then” with a sharp tongue. She asks Phil if he’s been married before. He says yes, but this one is for keeps. Phil tells her that Ben is excited for Stella to be his mum. Stella’s mum says “so you have a child then.”
Dot is going to take a smoke break when Stacey walks in. Stacey tells her that people are already talking about her and Bradley. Dot says “Don’t look at me. You know I’m the soul of discretion.” Stacey gives her a look, and Dot says maybe she did have a quiet word with Honey. Stacey says she wants everyone to leave her alone. Dot says “who knows where you were last night? No one right? You escaped the square and got a bit of privacy.”
Phil tells Stella’s mum he hopes that she and her husband can make it to their wedding. Stella starts to unravel and tells her Mum she could be pleased for her. Her Mum says that she is pleased for her. Stella yells at her mum that she has a funny way of showing it. Her mum tells her that she is sorry she’s disappointed her. Stella says that makes two of us. Her mum says “oh for goodness sakes Stella stop being so melodramatic” Phil goes to use the bathroom. Stella begs her mum not to spoil it for her. Stella says he’s just what I need. Her mum asks if she is what he needs or his son? Stella says they’ll have to be the judge of that. She says that Phil seems interested in Catherine and she assumes Stella hasn’t told him the truth. Phil comes out of the bathroom and hears something. He pushes a door open to see golf clubs. He investigates further to see Stella’s Dad. Stella’s mom asks her if she looks after this son of his. She says she does. Stella’s mum asks her how can she trust herself. Stella says it’s unfair; she was ten years old. Her mum pipes back that her sister was only 4 and you were supposed to watch her. Stella is in tears. Phil walks in to say that they need to cut things short and head out. Stella’s mom says she’s disappointed and was looking forward to another chat.
The bookies are busy, and Jim and Patrick are complaining about not being able to smoke. It gives Pat an idea.
Phil and Stella are leaving, and she says she warned her what she was like. Phil says he left his mobile inside. Stella calls after him.
Stacey and Mo have a go at each other.
Phil walks in and startles Stella’s dad and Mum. Phil wants to know why a high and mighty lawyer is hiding from his daughter. Stella’s Mum says there are some things you don’t need to explain to a stranger. Phil says he’s marrying Stella. Her father says “you what?” Phil says that she is a good person and she deserves better than this. Stella is sitting in the car nervously. She calls his mobile, but it’s in the car. She’s shocked. Stella’s mum says he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, as Stella has had the best of everything. Phil says it doesn’t explain why they treat her like they do. Stella’s mum says he seems to have the wrong impression about a lot of things. Phil says “meaning?” Stella’s mum says “Our other daughter for one” Phil says “Catherine?” Stella’s mum says she’s dead. Stella’s mum says they aren’t the only ones being deceiving. She tells Phil to ask Stella about just how her sister died.
Li is helping Mickey get ready for his appointment. She answers the door and escorts her in. Mickey comes out and sees Mo stripped down to her nightie and ran out. Li comes out laughing.
Phil and Stella are driving when he pulls over. She wants to know why did he lie to her? Did he think she didn’t know her father was in the house? Why did he lie about going back for his mobile when she called it, and it rang in the backseat. He wants to know why she’s lying. He knows her sister is dead and he wants the truth. Stella says that she died that is the truth. He wants to know what happened. She realizes Phil wasn’t told what happened by her parents. She screams amidst tears that her sister died of meningitis and her parents blamed her the lucky one. Phil speeds away.
Dot is finishing up at the laundrette and lights up and enjoys a smoke at work.
Phil and Stella pull up at the Vic. Phil asks Stella why she said she was going to see her sister at Christmas. She says that he needed to spend that time with Ben. She likes being on her own to think about her sister. She apologizes and says that she didn’t mean to lie. He tells Stella he needs some time to think. She asks him about the engagement party as it’s nearly 4.
Bradley comes in to find Stacey at the house. Dot and Jim rush out to leave them alone. Stacey wants him to ask her what she did today. He asks, and she tells him she has booked them a holiday at Belinda’s Villas. Bradley appears down in the dumps. Bradley is upset because he’s been offered a job in Paris.
Peggy is curious as to where Phil is. She tells Stella to go on through. Ian has a pop at the situation. Shirley is there and says she’s brought a towel. Stella is running out and runs into Phil. Phil gives a speech and toast to him and Stella. He looks her in the eye and tells her no more lies privately.
